Overview Presentations Applied Technology Case Studies Login
Changes in climate leading to drought conditions, coupled with an increase in urban populations continue to stress potable aquifer systems. Long-term strategies for managing and protecting groundwater resources now commonly incorporate technologies designed to monitor and record hourly, weekly, and seasonal fluctuations in groundwater levels, temperature and conductivity. These data play a vital role in understanding groundwater flow pathways, identifying water quality, and estimating groundwater availability.

CHALLENGES

Frequent groundwater measurements can be time consuming, costly, and increase the risks to human health. The frequent site visits involved in manual and traditional data collection methods increase the total man-hours required to cover entire monitoring networks. When combined with the time dedicated to connecting each monitoring well individually, long-term cost deficiencies are inevitable.

In addition, from data collection to long-term groundwater resource management, the monitoring cycle requires diverse tools and mechanisms; each destined to support and add value to the planning process. Tools and components such as dataloggers, wireless transceivers, acquisition instrumentation, and software are commonly acquired separately and must be customized or retrofitted to fit into the process. The need to deal with multiple suppliers leads to deficiencies in compatibility and increased downtime, support needs and adaptability costs.

Human resources play a fundamental role in the monitoring process. Limited accessibility and hazardous conditions present monitoring technicians with major obstacles when collecting data. This can lead to and increase in downtime, injury and even fatality.

Monitoring Groundwater Networks without Boundaries
Guelph, ON, Canada

In September 2006, Schlumberger Water Services (SWS), in cooperation with the City of Guelph’s Waterworks Department, conducted a pilot study covering 19 functioning wells scattered around 12 facilities and extended over 150km2 of land. Diver-NETZ was introduced in the second phase of the study. Combining field instrumentation with advanced wireless and data management capabilities, the integration of Diver-NETZ resulted in a substantial increase in groundwater monitoring efficiency.
