Nilson Guiguer, Ph.D. is the author of several groundwater
models, including FLOWPATH, FLONET/TRANS and Visual
MODFLOW. He received his Ph.D. in hydrogeology from
the University of Waterloo where he also taught the
graduate level course "Mathematical Modeling of
Groundwater Systems" during his teaching and post-doctoral
fellowship. He has also been involved in delivering
professional short courses around the world from the
United States to Spain, Australia and Japan. As president
of Waterloo Hydrogeologic, he is actively involved in
many consulting projects dealing with groundwater contamination
and protection, and has extensive experience in advising
municipalities and government agencies in Canada, the
USA and South America on wellhead protection delineation
methods.
Robert W. Cleary received his Ph.D. degree in
Chemical Engineering. He was a Professor of Civil Engineering
at Princeton University and a Professor of Geosciences
at the Institute of Geosciences of the University of
Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 1972 to 1991. During
this time he taught mathematical modeling to graduate
students and directed their research on the application
of modeling to remediation design, wellhead protection,
impact analyses of hazardous waste sites, and water
supply studies. He is currently a groundwater consultant
and an adjunct professor in the groundwater program
at the University of Waterloo. He is the principal technical
adviser for the Visual MODFLOW software package. His
research interests and practical experience include
all aspects of groundwater contamination, remediation
hydrology, modeling, site characterization and remediation
strategies. Considered one of the outstanding teachers
in the field, he originated and is the principal lecturer
in the National Ground Water Association's `IBM PC Applications'
course, Visual MODFLOW courses, and the Princeton Groundwater's
`Groundwater Pollution and Hydrology' course. Those
who have participated in the Princeton Groundwater short
course will attest to his dynamic, clear, and organized
teaching style. In addition to numerous technical articles
and reports, he as authored several book chapters dealing
with groundwater hydrology and modeling.
Daniel Gomes, M.Sc. has 18 years of experience
in many areas of hydrogeological consulting including
water management, mine dewatering, risk assessment,
design and implementation of remedial systems for groundwater
and soils, and groundwater flow and contaminant transport
modeling . Mr. Gomes received his M.Sc. in Geology and
Hydrogeology from the University of São Paulo
in Brazil. He is fluent in written and oral Spanish,
Portuguese, and English and has provided environmental
consultation and project management services in several
projects worldwide, including over 50 projects for Fortune
500 multinational companies. Mr. Gomes was recently
invited by the World Bank Groundwater Management Advisory
Group (GW-MATE) to co-author a manual on groundwater
quality protection. The International Atomic Energy
Agency and the World Health Organization also recognize
Mr. Gomes' expertise and have retained him as an expert
advisor and instructor on groundwater modeling. Mr.
Gomes coordinates WHI's international consulting projects,
including projects in the USA, Argentina, Brazil, Chile,
Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico, Uruguay, China, Thailand,
Vietnam and Pakistan.
Thomas Franz, M.A.Sc., is a founding principal
of Waterloo Hydrogeologic Inc., and Franz Environmental
Ltd. in Ontario, Canada. He has conducted numerous modeling
studies for impact assessments on landfill sites, feasibility
studies for soil and ground water remediation under
Superfund, and ground water protection schemes. He holds
graduate degrees in civil engineering from the University
of Stuttgart, Germany; and in hydrogeology from the
University of Waterloo. He has authored several ground
water models including Visual MODFLOW, FLOWPATH, FLOTRANS,
and AIRFLOW/SVE.
D.J. Miln Harvey, Ph.D., P.Eng. is a Hydrogeologist
with Waterloo Hydrogeologic Inc, and the Manager of
the Training Division. Dr. Harvey spent 5 years in the
Consulting Services Division where his current work
was focused on the integration of groundwater flow models
with GIS data management to assess regional groundwater
protection strategies through WHPA delineation and Groundwater
Vulnerability Assessment. His work also involved the
assessment of groundwater contaminant impacts through
fate and transport modeling, and the potential for Natural
Attenuation of these contaminants. This is an extension
of his Ph.D. research at the University of Waterloo,
which focused on risk-based decision making for the
delineation of Wellhead Protection Areas for municipal
supply wells at risk to contamination. Prior to his
graduate work, Dr. Harvey worked as a civil engineer
on the design, inspection and operation of solid waste
landfills in Canada. He has extensive experience in
the use of models for groundwater analysis and prediction,
as well as their use as an integral component in the
decision making process. He continues his interest in
teaching as a lecturer for Groundwater Modeling Courses
offered by Waterloo Hydrogeologic.

Troy Schultz is Vice President of BJAAM Environmental
Incorporated. Mr. Schultz holds a Bachelors degree in
Geology from Kent State University and has 15 years
of experience in the environmental industry. He specializes
in the development of site-specific clean-up standards
and has delivered numerous courses to government agencies
and industries on the use and implementation of risk-based
approaches to corrective actions (e.g., OhioEPA, Puerto
Rico EQB, Argentina and Brazil). The American Society
for Testing and Material (ASTM) has designated Mr. Schultz
as a Sanctioned Risk Based Corrective Actions (RBCA)
Trainer. He also provides expert witness reports and
testimony regarding remediation costs and risk assessment
on behalf of companies such as Shell Oil and BP. Mr.
Schultz serves on several state rules and technical
committees and has past experience as a Risk Assessor
for the State of Ohio.
Lynn Spence is an independent consultant with expertise
in chemical risk assessments and fate and transport
modeling. Lynn has 17 years experience in environmental
engineering, risk assessments, remedial investigations,
litigation support and contaminant transport modeling.
She is the developer of BP's Risk Integrated Software
for Clean-ups (RISC). Lynn teaches short courses on
risk assessment and fate and transport modeling for
regulatory agencies. is an independent consultant with
expertise in chemical risk assessments and fate and
transport modeling. Lynn has 17 years experience in
environmental engineering, risk assessments, remedial
investigations, litigation support and contaminant transport
modeling. She is the developer of BP's Risk Integrated
Software for Clean-ups (RISC). Lynn teaches short courses
on risk assessment and fate and transport modeling for
regulatory agencies.
Polo Velasco, M.Sc. is one of the Instructors
for the Risk Assessment course. He has more than 38
years of consulting engineering experience in geotechnical
and environmental engineering. He has a wide range of
experience in environmental site assessment, in the
remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, using
a variety of techniques such as: landfarming, soil venting,
hydrocarbon removal using recovery wells and trenches,
waste stabilization / solidification, and in the closure
of hazardous waste sites and of petroleum contaminated
sites using risk assessment to establish soil and groundwater
clean up levels.
During the last 21 years he worked with the British
Petroleum (BP) in the US as a Senior Geoenvironmental
Advisor and was responsible for the technical implementation
of the ASTM Risk Based Corrective Action (RBCA) procedure
at over 600 Gasoline Retail Stations in the US. Other
responsibilities while working for BP included the training
of Consultants in the practical application of fate
and transport models used in the RBCA process. Some
of the models included in the training of the Consultants
were: the Johnson&Ettinger volatilization to indoor,
all the models presented in the ASTM E1739-95"
Standard Guide for Risk-Based Corrective Action Applied
at Petroleum-Release Sites '' , and groundwater screening
models, such as BIOSCREEN. He was also responsible for
the technical interaction with Regulatory Agencies.
He developed the methodology used by the Bureau of Underground
Storage Tanks (BUSTR) in Ohio to evaluate the soil leaching
to groundwater pathway.
