Waterloo Hydrogeologic hosted two successful online training courses focused on groundwater modeling with MODFLOW-USG on December 11th and 12th. This course followed the release of Visual MODFLOW Flex 2014.1 which introduces support for MODFLOW-USG – a new version of the MODFLOW groundwater flow program that uses unstructured grids.
The course content focused on MODFLOW-USG theory including details on ghost node well correction, connected linear network process and information on future developments of this code. The use of MODFLOW-USG in the Visual MODFLOW Flex interface was also discussed, outlining the specifics of unstructured grid generation and how properties and boundary conditions are applied to the grid cells. The concepts learned in the course were enforced with a software exercise in which the course participants created their own unstructured grid, ran a groundwater model and viewed the results.
Overall the course was well received by participants with great feedback on the MODFLOW-USG implementation in Visual MODFLOW Flex. This course had the highest enrollment rate of any Waterloo Hydrogeologic online training course in 2013. Due to popular demand, an additional session of this course will be offered on January 30th, 2014 from 12 pm to 3 pm EST.
