Course Description:

This hands-on course introduces environmental professionals to the application of AquaChem to projects requiring the interpretation of aqueous geochemical data. Hands-on exercises using AquaChem will be completed throughout the course to demonstrate various techniques for importing, querying, and reporting water quality data; principles and use of a database; and the use of the program to complete temporal and spatial geochemical data interpretation.

Course Topics:

  • The fundamentals of managing water quality data and interpreting results
  • Concepts and benefits of relational databases for hydrochemistry data management
  • Importing water quality data from a variety of data sources into a relational database
  • Customizing database structure to complement your data
  • Automatic identification of samples which exceed regulatory limits
  • Using sample data with PHREEQC
  • Plotting spatial and temporal patterns in water quality data
  • Statistical evaluations and an introduction to R-Console

The exercises used in the course require a current AquaChem license.  An AquaChem trial license will be provided for use during the course as part of the registration fee for those who need it.

Who should attend?

This course is suited for anyone interested in learning the fundamentals behind the numerical and graphical toolset for efficient analysis of most water chemistry data sets.  Prior experience is not required however basic knowledge of the principles of geochemistry is necessary to grasp the course material.

Attendees are required to provide their own computers with the software loaded and connect remotely to the online course.

Computers with the following minimum requirements are needed to run AquaChem:

System Requirements:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise
  • Processor: 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Hard Disk: 250MB (Minimum)
  • RAM: 8GB or more recommended

Software Requirements (not included with installation):

  • 32-bit (x86) version of MS Office 365 Access or MS Office 2019 Access
  • 32-bit (x86) version of MS Access Runtime Engine 2007 or newerNote: if you have a 64-bit version of Microsoft Office, you will need to install a 32-bit version of the MS-Access Runtime Engine that is different from your Office version. For example, if you have Office 2019 x64 installed, you can install the 32-bit version of the Access Runtime Engine 2010, 2013, or 2016.

What you will get!

  • 30-day temporary training license of AquaChem
  • PDF copy of all the course lectures and exercises
  • Networking with other environmental professionals
  • 10% discount on new AquaChem licenses for attendees
  • A certificate of attendance for completing the course

The course will be led by Nicholas Lyle, the lead trainer at Waterloo Hydrogeologic, and Lara Lange, a geologist from Water Services and Technologies. Our instructors bring a wealth of real-world experience with a strong understanding of the underlying principles to help explain the concepts covered in the course and answer questions you may have.
